Starting to Research January 29, 2008

1. One of my major concerns that I have with writing my research paper is that there wont be a lot of journals for me to use for my sources and information. A lot of the information I know came from talking to people and from different sites online. I am curious/interested in this topic because I have watched a lot of videos on it as well as talking to a NJ firefighter and heard what he thought. I also am very unsure about what I feel about the attacks, so I’m excited to see what I find which will let me be able to make my decision on the fact. Which in turn maybe help my readers start to think differently or allow them to clarify what they already knew.

Question I have: Can I use the 9/11 Commission Report?

2. A. I think that the fact that the Department of Defense (of the US) had made plans of what would happen if a 757 plane would hit into the Pentagon years before the attacks is very suspicious.

Why was there attack plans on the US with the same scenario years before?

B. I think that the fact that US jets were trained for what to do in the same situation is a weird thing, especially because when you listen to the tapes of the cockpit they are unsure of what to do.

Was was there no straight protocol for what the jet pilots were supposed to do in a time of attack?

C. The fact that a 757 plane which is very large (one of the engines is at least 9 feet wide, which is placed on each wing of the plane) is what is said to have hit the Pentagon. When the hole that was left in the building was much smaller. Also in the 3rd wall of the buildings structure there was a small hole, nothing like a plane shape.

Why is the hole on the side of the Pentagon small when compared to the size of a 757?

D. The fact that the eye witness reporting’s of what the planes looked like differ is strange to me. Every American knows what a commercial plane looks like, as well as a jet.

Why is the description of the plane such a hard thing to define, when Americans know what different planes look like?

E. In the videos from many different news stations such as CNN & ABC News there is visible “explosions” or what seems to be an explosion under and before where the planes hit the World Trade Centers.

Why is there an “explosion” type of image below the falling of the World Trade Centers?

3. There has been a lot of research from many conspiracy theorist groups as well as personal interest pieces. There is a movie called Loose Change which is one of the most famous 9/11 videos on the internet/DVD sales. In my research I would like to bring more information to my readers. What I mean is that most people do not know about the different theories/conspiracy’s so they just brush them off.

4. The way I will conduct my research is:

1. Set up a thesis statement & define who my readers are, as well as what type of writing I want to do

2. Look for journals online to use

3. Make a huge list of journals/sources that I can use for my paper

4. Get that research & annotate the parts that are important to my paper, also call my friends dad to ask him for an interview, if he says yes then I will make a list of questions to ask and record his answers

5. Start a first draft of my paper & complete my works sited

6. Read it myself, Have other people read it, then have someone read it out loud to me

7. Fix the grammar, add more information where it needs to be strengthened

8. Repeat step 6 over & over & over again

9. Turn it in

5. Places where I can publish my work: The links under the blogroll.

1. 911truth.org

2. Scholars for 9/11 Truth

3. 911readingroom.org 4. 911blogger.com

For my research paper I would really like to do a ppaer on the sept. 11 controversy. I really got into this topic with my last boyfriend, his dad is a New Jersey firefighter and was in NYC for a long time, Im not sure hpw long but it was for awhile. He helped woth rescuseing all of the vitims as well as looking for bodys. in their living room he has a whole wall of stuff from that, such as a letter/picture from the president thanking him for all of his hard work as well as a piece of the one tower, such as a level floor sign. He was the one who said it seemed so unreal and talked to his son about it which inturn alloewed me to do the same. We have watched alot of documents/ movies about the surrounding contoversys and I was really surprised how so many people thought it was such a lie. It was rthe gov doing the acts not a terrorist group. I like how this topic is still new and is emotional. I also think it is really interesting how people think if you question or second guess 9/11 that you are a terrorist yourself, or that you arent behind your country which means you arent behind the troops theat gare over seas fighting for our country. We would of never had any of the advances we have now even if no one ever questioned the facts and truths we were once told. Im not sure what for example but Im

The top 3 topics that I would like to write my paper on would be:

1. The Sept. 11 Controversy

2. Eating Disorders

3.Growing drug use in America

I would like to write about the controversy surrounding 9/11 because it is such a historical and emotional event that effected every Americans life. I would like to learn more about what really happened on this day and the days/years prior to the 11th. There is a lot of conversation about if it was a planned attack by our government or if it really was an act of terrorism. Something new to the topic I feel I could bring would be some new information that is not really talked about but is very important and influential to the situation.

Eating disorders are a growing problem in society, that the media is only seeming to fuel. It is a very serious issue that has been growing rapidly in the past few years. I would like to learn more about why girls are getting eating disorders at such a young age. Something new to the topic I feel I could bring would be some research studies that prove how the media is influencing young girls.

The use of drugs in Ameria has been growing ever since drugs have began. There has been highs and lows of certain drugs but as the years go on, their popularity seems to continue. I feel like I can learn more about why people are so infatuated with drugs and the use of drugs. Something new I would like to bring to the topic is to learn and inform about the growth in drugs throughout the years, maybe even using charts and graphs.

Topic: Controversy of Sept 11

When September 11 2001 happened many people thought that it was a terrorist group taking attack on America. Yet, in the following years many scientists and researchers are looking into the attacks to see who is really behind Sept 11 attacks.

Who really was behind the attack on September 11, 2001?

When talking about the attacks on September 11, 2001, were they an act of terrorism or was it a carefully plotted and planned attack by the American government?

How do you describe yourself? Do you do it in a physical, emotional or mental way? Are you tall, intelligent, and funny? Or is it something you’ve done or something someone has told you that really affected you’re life and made you who you are today. I personally describe myself in many different ways. Each way depends on what I feel is appropriate for the person to know, and how I am meeting the person.

The first way I describe myself is by a quote that was told to me by my ex… He said it in during a fight we once had and it really made me think about things in my life. I never knew until doing this, that the quote he told me was a quote that is closely related to one of Gandhi’s famous quotes. “You have to become the change you want to see,” was what he told me and Gandhi’s quote is “We must become the change we want to see.” (Thinkexist.com) This simple yet complex quote really is who I am and who I have become in the past few years. Things I used to do… I don’t. Just like things I would of never of done are things I do on a daily basis. I used to never enjoy exercising and being a vegetarian but now I am and it’s a big part of my life. It was not only a decision that changed my lifestyle habits and outward appearance. For me being a vegetarian is peaceful, knowing that the food to survive doesn’t come at the expensive of animals dying. This quote has made me realize if I want change, I have to start with myself, not to sit and complain about things but to start something.

The changes I’ve made in my life may not saved lives in other countries yet they have allowed me to become more mature and understanding of other people. I’ve made friends, that just because of where they are from or what they look like, I would have never looked twice before. Now they are some of my best friends. I emailed my good friend Rochelle asking what she liked about me and she responded that I am “creative, funny, and ridiculously nice.” (Upholster. 20 Jan. 2008) I would of never of thought of myself as creative or ridiculously nice but to her I am. It’s not a change but it is another view of me without me actually having to really “type” myself. Rochelle and I have become good friends now and we have fun memories that I’ll tell my children when I’m older.

Yet, I haven’t really told you a lot about myself. I’ve really changed as in mentally, physically, and as a person throughout the past few years. I’m a caring, loving, funny, intelligent, and dedicated young woman who loves to be with her friends and sorority sisters. I’m 19 years old and I go to IUP for Sociology in a Juvenile Delinquency concentration. I enjoy helping others and often find humor in the most awkward places. Ill be honest, I don’t know what I really want to do when I’m older… I have a lot of ambitions, with a lot of time to achieve them. I don’t mind that I don’t know if IUP is completely right or if art or beauty school is in my future (I applied and was accepted to both schools yet a scholarship to IUP persuaded my decision).

One of the most influential things that has made me who I am today is my love of graffiti art. It is more than just vandalism. It’s a way of expressing yourself such as this paper is permitting me to express myself now. Being able to write and show your talents is one thing that I have enjoyed for almost 4 years. It is something my then boyfriend, his friends and I used to do when I lived in New Jersey. When you create graffiti you get a “tag name” and a “tag name” is what you paint… Mine was skirt because I was the only girl that would go with them. The first time I went “bombing/tagging,” I wore a skirt and from then on that is what I tag.

It’s a great form of expression I feel, it allows you to make new friends, travel, and is thrilling. The chance of being caught is exciting as well as stupid but it’s almost like being famous. Your art is famous, not you. People talk about what you did last night yet, they some don’t know it was you who “tagged” the local train station. It’s one of the best parts of being a graffiti artist. There are pictures attached that let you see some of mine and my friends work/sketches. (Wranich, 2008 Photo, Jersey Tags)

So when I was first thinking about writing this paper I didn’t know how to start… Should I really tell these strangers who I am? Should I share with them my hobbies and talents? I was unsure, but then that is who I am. Besides the physical characteristics you can see, I wanted you to know things about me you can’t tell from looking at me. So, Hi I’m Erica. I’m short, funny, nice, living life, smart and an artist.

  1. The paper above I feel is a narrative/informative. I think that it is a narrative/informative because it is a story of what makes me who I am. It has informative information about what I like to do and why. It also answers the question who am I?
  2. My audience for this essay is my group members (& classmates) as well as Prof Harrison.
  3. In this paper I would maybe change the way it is formatted. I would probably put the graffiti part first because it describes me a lot. Secondly I would have put more information about myself on here instead of stories about why and how.

What is research? January 15, 2008

Research along with every word in the English language, has multiple meanings and definitions. MSN Encarta defines the word research as an organized study: methodical investigation into a subject in order to discover facts, to establish or revise a theory, or to develop a plan of action based on the facts discovered.”(MSN Encarta, 2007) There is no 100% clear cut explanation as for what research can “uncover” and explain.

I personally feel that the word research can be defined as an action we are active in, in everyday life. Research allows us to understand and appreciate things and events in a deeper realization, not just what we first comprehended… Without research we would still be working with the tools of the cavemen and the idea of diversity and equality for men and women would be unheard of. What I mean is that without the research, we would not have the advances we have today.

People use some form of research on a daily basis. Such examples are using the internet, or books to find more information on a topic, and conducting trials. Gaining information by talking to people you feel would help you further you’re knowledge in a positive way, is an example of research. Conducting research does not always have to be formal; it also can be used in an informal approach to help discover the most unimportant facts.

Research, anyway you use it can help you grow mentally, as well as help produce some of the most impressive results. It has the ability to make people think about things in a new way, the capability of forming new innovations or even helping someone pick the best gift due to ratings on the internet. Anyway we see it and use it research, with or without clear limits is a positive attribute to our society.
